(September 22, 2023) Norman and Margaret Moss reflect…
Listening to the introduction to a BBC Prom the other evening, we learned that Schumann’s Piano Concerto has a romantic secret.
The Clara Code
A key theme of the concerto is a series of notes which represent the name of Schumann’s beloved Clara. Sometimes this is referred to as the Clara code.
What a precious tribute to her! Schumann had written a whole concerto through which Clara’s name is enshrined forever. A very precious concerto indeed!
But – there is another concerto that is even more precious!
The greatest romance of all…
The name of Jesus runs like a motif through the whole of our own existence as believers –
- Not a day passes without our expressions of worship to Him.
- His love for us knows no end.
- His goodness and mercy follow us, dwell within us, and surround us every day of our lives.
- This is the greatest romance of all!
That well known hymn (based on Solomon’s Song of Songs 2:16) says so much – My Beloved is Mine, and I am His. God’s love is so precious!
We were led us to meditate on Psalm 23:6, ‘Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.’
We felt the Lord was saying –
‘Know that your names are written in my book. I am the good Shepherd and I call you by name, for my love is set upon you. I chose you and set my love on you and you have chosen me. Rest in my love and be sure that I am with you to keep you and to provide for you.
‘In the valley of the shadow I will be with you as surely as in the pleasant pastures where you lie down in peace. Do not let your heart be troubled, but receive my peace. Let my blessing rest on you and my tender grace support you. For you are my beloved children.
‘Always think of the future as a home coming, for my house is your dwelling place. Where I am you shall be also, and there is no better home. You shall see my glory, you shall walk with me, and nothing shall harm you.
‘Your loved ones have gone before you, the saints of former times are safe with me. I am the God of Abraham, and Abraham is with me today. There are wonders in store for you, the future is glorious and above all else you will see me and enjoy me forever with no fear that your joy will come to an end.
‘Therefore, live each day now in simple trust. I will never leave you, I will never forsake you! You will never be alone, for I am with you keeping watch.
‘Look what’s following you, surely – most certainly, without fail. Goodness, mercy and love – your rearguard following you every day of your life. For my goodness and love will not stray from you. By no means, not for a moment.
‘And then, you can see what lies before you. A welcome place in my home forever. What wonders await you, what joy is yours because you belong to me. How blessed are the people of God! How very blessed!’
Blessed indeed!
God’s love for His children is precious indeed! His song of love for us cost our Saviour Jesus so much (John 3:16).
God’s concerto is the greatest, the most precious, concerto ever!
