Jung-Shim (*name changed) first heard the gospel from her younger sister. Initially, she did not fully understand or appreciate the message and replied, ‘So?’

At this time, she had been making plans to escape from North Korea and felt she needed help from a Higher Power, and prayed to a God she still did not know, according to a report by Cornerstone International Ministries.

Prayers Answered
She miraculously arrived in South Korea, overcoming death many times. After her arrival she heard someone say, ‘Many people have prayed to God for you to come safely to South Korea. God listened to our prayers, so we are happy and grateful to see you in person.’

Jung-Shim realised many believers had been praying for her. She responded after hearing the gospel once again, surrendering her life to Jesus as her Saviour and Lord.

She called her mother in North Korea to tell her the news. ‘Ommonni (mother) now you must believe in God so you will have eternal life in heaven.’ She limited her phone call to a few minutes to avoid electronic eavesdroppers working for the government.

After two more calls imploring her mother with the same message, her mother said, ‘My daughter, don’t say any more. I now believe in God. I also believe in going to heaven and meeting God. So when I meet people in my neighbourhood these days, I tell them they must believe in God to go to heaven.’

Good News
Jung-Shim was overjoyed to hear her elderly mother had become a child of God, but also concerned for her welfare, worried that someone in the atheist country might report her to the communist authorities. ‘The townsfolk do not accuse you?’ she asked.

‘It’s no problem. People think I’m senile and that is the reason I’m saying these things.’

One day Jung-Shim called one of her mother’s neighbours. During the call, she learned that the neighbour had heard the gospel from her mother. ‘Jung-Shim, I have a very difficult problem right now, please help. Your mother shared the words that should not be spoken in this land. She boastfully speaks the gospel in public. She says things like, “Nothing is impossible with God”… “Miracles happen when you believe in God”… “God will protect you.”’

When she added, ‘If you don’t stop her, she will be accused, and the government will put her to death’ Jung-Shim urgently sent a text message to her mother, asking her to stop sharing the gospel in public places. She received this reply: ‘If I die, I will be in heaven with the Lord.’

No Fear of Death
Jung-Shim realised her mother had no fear of death. So, she sent this text message: ‘Yes, God is the one who protects you and gives you rest from your tribulation, so that neither the sun by day nor the moon by night can harm you.’

Then her mother boldly asked her daughter to send text messages with scripture and hymns, including video clips.

‘Mother said that when God’s word and praises along with videos are shown, an amazing work is taking place where families in North Korea accept Jesus Christ as their Saviour. She was not in fear, but brave, knowing she will be in heaven,’ Jung-Shim told Cornerstone.

‘She even pointed me to 2Timothy 2:9, as Paul said, “For the sake of the gospel, I suffered to the point of imprisonment, but the word of God is not bound.”’
