(March 17, 2025) Pastor George Caleb Oguta shares a great testimony…
Born in Kenya I was raised by what became a Christian family. My parents, Caleb and Grace, are now in heaven… but it wasn’t always a happy family. I grew up in a disorganised and sinful family despite the fact that my parents were strong Catholic. We just didn’t know God!
But they came to knowing Him— and I too was to discover and know Jesus as my Saviour and Lord… and enjoy Christianity and a great church life.
The background was this— the head of our home during those troubled times was not my father… but Satan! Domestic violence was going on, alcoholism, prostitution, drug abuse and many other bad things. We were the poorest in our little village.
God Intercedes
One day in 1996 a servant of God, who was passing through enroute to another destination, found my father and mother fighting on one side of our street and my grandmother drunk and making noise on the other side. Pastor Edward Samuel, God’s servant, intervened between my father and mother and they stopped fighting. Then he prayed for them.
The next day, Pastor Edward came back and had a Bible study on Galatians 5 with my parents. After pointing out the sinful lifestyle highlighted in verses 19-21, this pastor shared about verses 22-24: ‘But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.’
To cut the story short, my parents accepted Jesus and became Christians, praise God! And… a church began in our home. Later my father offered land to Pastor Edward and he built a church on it.
As for me… in my family, I am the second born. In growing up there came a time when my father lost hope in me because I was not smart in school. Then there were rumours that I was born out of wedlock. All this impacted my emotions badly… but what is good was that I too devoted myself to Jesus, accepting Him as my Saviour!
God Encourages
And I grew in Jesus and Christianity… and later at one point I humbly took on the role of being a church cleaner. I sensed God saying to my heart: ‘You are doing right, Oguta… you do what you can. Keep walking in my light and I will multiply your efforts.’
And He did! In His time God promoted me to other positions in the church— big positions. In charge of security, bag carrier for my pastor everywhere he went, translating sermons, Sunday school leader, gained a certificate in theology, and then one day… I was appointed Associate Pastor. All these roles, including cleaning, I did with a passion.
In 2001 there was a convention in our church and other churches were meeting together with us. One meeting saw a visitation of the district superintendent. During the meeting, at one point an elderly lady who praying suddenly started speaking in tongues!
Abruptly the district superintendent stood up and stopped her and ordered that she be thrown out of the church, an act that did not go well with other church members.
What took place after that was sad! Church members were not happy. I condemned the act against that sincere lady whom we knew had been praying from her heart and was now weeping. Unfortunately there was a church split! Members left the church and my father and I were really the only ones who remained (Mother was to pass on to glory three years later).
God Blesses
But we prayed believing the Lord would fulfill His plans for us and the church. And in His time God multiplied us to 40 members! Later on as the church grew further we renamed it Center Fellowship of Christ, Rongo, Kenya.
Since then, by God’s grace, we have grown to 300 members— a non-denominational, Bible-teaching church with a children’s ministry, prison ministry, and 25 other smaller churches in different towns around Kenya. And we are open to the Holy Spirit and His powerful ministry gifts.
Since then, by God’s grace, we have grown to 300 members, We have a children’s ministry, prison ministry, and 25 other smaller churches in different towns around Kenya. And we are open to the Holy Spirit and His powerful ministry gifts.
We also have local house churches: These are to cater for the spiritual needs of our members who are old and can’t walk far.
And… in growing congregation-wise we encourage all our people to work together to expand God’s kingdom. My calling is not just to preach or pastor a church but to be generous in every way. After all, our God is a generous God and His word encourages us to be likewise (Proverbs 11:24, Luke 6:38, 2Corinthians 9:6,11ESB).
What I have done is what God has called me to do. I always pray that God will bless my ministry, and my church’s ministry as it touches many people in my country just not the local community. Amen!
My testimony is for the glory of God, and my encouragement to all Christians everywhere is to keep walking in the light of Jesus! (1John 1:7).
