ANXIETY STEMS FROM MISPLACED TRUST!

(May 14, 2025) Mama Lava, sharing from her heart, reminds us of another great truth…

Hello again!

Trust is our theme this month, as we work on alleviating our anxiety. Specifically trust in God.

Think about this… we put our trust in many things every day. We trust that—

  • What we buy online will arrive as described.
  • The amount charged on our various bills is accurate.
  • Our cars will get us from point of origin to destination without breaking down.

We trust all these things… even though they’ve each likely failed us at one time or another! But— how much of our anxiety stems from misplaced trust?

Trying Incident
The other day two of my daughters met for lunch. On the way home, one of them called me. She was thinking about the bill, and it wasn’t computing. She told me what she ordered, what my other daughter ordered, and what my grandson ate. She told me the price for each item. Then she told me the total and I agreed. It didn’t add up.

She said that when the bill arrived, she was focused on paying it before her sister tried, so she didn’t inspect it closely. But now that she had a quiet moment, she couldn’t make sense of it. And she was stressed out!

She called the restaurant when she got home. They identified their mistake and admitted they had overcharged $20 too much. Her reimbursement is in the works… or so she trusts!

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve looked through a grocery receipt and found errors. Sale items often do not ring up at their reduced price. I’ve learned to always look over the receipt before I leave the store because I cannot trust point of sale computers.

You know what else, who else I cannot trust? Me! And my thoughts, my emotions, and my word! I can be fickle, change my mind, and go back on my best intentions. No wonder Solomon wrote ‘Those who trust in themselves are fools, but those who walk in wisdom are kept safe’ (Proverbs 28:26).

Trustworthy God
But do you know who and what is always trustworthy? God, His Word, and His plans! As I shared in Mama Lava’s Back Porch over the last few months, He is who He says He isHe is for usHe is able and He keeps His promises.

The prophet Isaiah strongly declared that we could ‘Trust in the Lord for ever, for the Lord, the Lord Himself, is the Rock eternal’ (Isaiah 26:4).

When we are charged in error or our technical gadgets malfunction, we find the fault and get them fixed. But when the discrepancy is between us and God, we are the problem. Resolution comes when we adjust ourselves to Him.

Proverbs 3:5-6 is so comforting: ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.’

God is so trustworthy! If we let Him be God and align ourselves with Him, we won’t have so much to worry about. Anxiety often stems from misplaced trust. But when we trust the Lord, He will take our anxiety, straighten us out, and give us His peace.

Paul confidently encourages ‘Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus’ (Philippians 4:6-7).

Be encouraged, dear readers!

  1. Amen! Scripture encourages us not to be anxious about anything… but we find TRUST doesn’t come easy. Here are some words we sometimes sing in my home fellowship–

‘All your ANXIETIES all your care, take to the mercy seat leave them there, never a burden He cannot bear, never a FRIEND like Jesus.’
