Dear Dr Jim
I’ve been doing some meditating on Psalm 23 which is very rich in meaning and has been a great comfort in this current season of uncertainly. I love the image of the shepherd and God’s gentle loving care.
Many of the descriptions of God’s leadership are quite gentle— ‘He leads me beside quiet waters’, ‘He guides me in paths of righteousness’, ‘you prepare a table’ and ‘you anoint my head’ and such.

Habakkuk, a contemporary of Nahum and Zephaniah, was in deep emotional and spiritual anguish!
He would have been familiar with the words of Moses— ‘Oh, praise the greatness of our God! He is the Rock, His works are perfect, and all His ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is He’ (Deuteronomy 32:3-4).
But how could he reconcile that principle of his faith with the ongoing sense of international insecurity and widespread corruption in the world in which he lived?

There are times in life when things are hard, and life is difficult. Has that been the case in your life? Encountered dark hours?
In Acts 16, Paul and Silas were beaten and thrown into prison. They didn’t know whether they would be rescued or killed for their faith. Nevertheless, they prayed and sang to the Lord in their darkest hour. How were they able to do that, you ask. Because God is worthy of our worship no what matter our circumstances.
Hence a question for any troubled reader, any troubled Christian…

Each year as the summer wanes, I force myself to continue pruning my flowers or deadheading them!
Essential Motivated Pruning
In the horticulture world, deadheading means removing faded blooms, especially in flower gardens. After the plants are pruned, more blooms emerge.
In the spring, I’m filled with energy and excitement as I dig holes to plant my flowers. Pruning them as they grow isn’t a chore, but a delight because I know it will increase the number of blossoms. My enthusiasm, however, decreases as the summer days go by, sapping my energy and spirit.

I had a friend who collected books by Richmal Crompton. He was especially keen to find first editions. Sometimes it tested my patience while I waited for him to rummage through musty piles of books in second-hand bookshops.
It is one thing to love a book because of its contents, but many of us love the smell of a book, the feel of a book, as well as delighting in the pleasure of reading it. Most of us find that somehow books accumulate and yet to part from any one of them is like losing a friend.

Warm greetings to everyone on the occasion of India’s Independence Day here today. We gratefully remember and honour the countless martyrs who selflessly laid down their lives so that we might enjoy the blessings of freedom.
As I reflected on this theme, I was reminded of a far greater freedom— one that Jesus Christ fought to secure for us! Scripture teaches that we were once slaves to sin (Romans 6:20). The apostle Paul poignantly expresses this in Romans 7:24: ‘What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?’

(July 28, 2025) Robert and Maureen McQuillan share…
As most of you know we like relaxing by watching old movies… especially these days as I (Robert) can’t do much as a result of that very bad fall I had early this month (Thanks to the many friends who are praying for me.. and Maureen, my first-aid specialist ‘nurse!’).
Yes, just to please me Maureen still lets me suggest watching old John Wayne movies! (and yes, she enjoys them too!). And yes, since I was a kid the Duke has been ‘my hero’… even beyond Batman, Flash Gordon, Cagney and Bogart.
Discovery
But… better still, and more meaningful, both Maureen and I at a very young age, five or six, discovered the greatest ‘hero’— Jesus Christ! And recently in my taking it easy to recover, we discovered the brilliant Rosemary Siemens singing those precious old hymns that so many Christians and churches don’t sing or even know these days! And what a precious gentle voice and her mastery of integrated violin playing. We’ve been so blessed!

When we look back on the history of the lives of various ministers of the gospel, our Father God has been faithful in taking care of and meeting all the needs of His servants in all circumstances.
Now at times God’s servants are not without need, but He is faithful in ensuring they are successful. Indeed, He never leaves them comfortless.
Ministry Invitation
In 1982, I was invited to preach the gospel in a village near Chennai (Madras). The program was for a whole day once I arrived there, so some of my co-workers went there the previous day to carry out the preliminary arrangements.

The crisis was unimaginable. I couldn’t fathom what she was going through. The desperation I felt for a friend on her behalf couldn’t have come close to what she must have been feeling.
I was a step removed from the situation, but the gut punch I felt knocked me off my feet.

The world of professional wrestling and millions of fans worldwide grieve the loss of Terry Bollea, better known as Hulk Hogan, who passed into the arms of Jesus on Thursday morning from his home in Clearwater, Florida. He was 71.
Emergency responders found him unresponsive following a reported heart attack, and he was pronounced dead at a local hospital, according to TMZ Sports.
