IN DEFENSE OF ‘WHINGERS’

(October 19, 2020) Erica Grace, ex-missionary to South America, challenges us to really care for others.

As we were waiting for the bell to ring, the children were running all over the school playground. Suddenly ‘Adam’ (not real name) tripped and fell down the concrete steps, right by my feet.

I reached down to help him but his mother stopped me, saying, ‘He’ll be right. I don’t want him to be a whinger.’  Then she turned to Adam and said, ‘Get up, Adam. Men don’t cry!’

My eyes followed little Adam as he got up and limped behind a bush to rub his little knees and wipe away his tears.  Yes, little Adam will never become a whinger.

People need to share!
A few days later I sat waiting for a bus at the Ringwood station. We were having a heat wave and even the shade was hot. Suddenly an elderly lady came from nowhere and sat right next to me, so close to me that she was in fact sitting on the edge of my dress!

In my heart I felt annoyed, she had so much bench space; why sit so close on such a hot day.

I admit that I was thinking of pulling my dress from under her… but that first reaction was to change quickly when she suddenly turned her deeply lined face to me and said in a loud, anguished voice: ‘I just came from my nephew’s funeral. He was only 26. If only he had been able to talk to someone, he wouldn’t have committed suicide.’

‘BLACK HAWK DOWN’ SURVIVOR SAYS JESUS IS THE ONLY WAY TO TRANSFORM THE WORLD

Mark Ellis 2016
Mark Ellis (left) and Michael Ashcraft share a great testimony…

What impacted Jeff Struecker most was not the thousands of hostile Somalis swarming his Humvee, nor the hailstorm of bullets and RPGs as he attempted to rescue fellow Rangers in the ill-fated 1993 raid of Mogadishu made famous by the movie Black Hawk Down.

What impacted him most was the next October morning back at base when his buddies one by one asked him about death and the afterlife. (more…)

Christian Adventure Series – Fantastic publications from Keystone Resources

Denis SmithDr Denis Smith writes: ‘Thank you for the many good comments received on the launch of our website. Our goal is to use the website to support missionaries, churches, charities and individuals to reach their goals. This particular series has been used to assist new believers in their Christian walk and is a valuable asset to every church and minister’s ministry.’

Using all the Christian Adventure Studies, churches are investing $25 into the life of each person who makes a commitment to Christ. That’s a valuable investment on potentially eternal rewards. First Steps should be given to individuals (along with a Gospel of John or a Bible) who make their commitment to Christ and covers: (1) How to keep one’s life clean before God (2) How to relate to the family of God and (3) How to read and understand God’s word. This study guide can be completed in a group situation if there are sufficient numbers – but it should be commenced at least with their follow-up worker as soon as possible after their commitment to Jesus Christ. With whole episodes of morning news broadcasts (such as Good Morning America) dedicated to his life and suicide, social media pandemonium, and personal reflections abounding around the globe, ASSIST News Service felt to address the very sensitive topic of suicide.

In 2013, writer, musician, minister and Special to ASSIST, Brian Nixon, wrote about the topic (hereunder), using two notable individuals: Ian Curtis of the rock band, Joy Division, and Christian Apologist, Ravi Zacharias as a contrast. The article is reprinted as follows to help those struggling with this. (more…)
