(March 6, 2017) Robert and Maureen McQuillan reminisce and share a challenge to dare …
An article in a magazine about movies/TV shows/comic characters grabbed our attention last week –taking us back to the fifties, yet speaking about a real need today!
In a day when some serious-minded Christians, including church leaders, are saying that we need a fresh revival, here was an article by the delighted editor about another revival, that of the renowned 1950s British comic book hero – Dan Dare.
First Eagle, April 14, 1950
Okay… many, especially our younger generation and non-Brits will wonder who’s he? Who was Dan Dare? This editor (not an aged senior, by the way!) stated it simply – ‘Before there was the science fiction Quartermass, before Doctor Who, before … there was ColonelDan Dare – Pilot of the Future.
Boldly going places
We can easily add that decades before Star Trek and the Klingons or Star Wars and Dark Vader, there was Dan Dare and his arch-nemesis, the evil reptile-looking Mekon of Mekonta, ruler of the Treens! Decades before James T Kirk ever declared the Enterprise’s mission to ‘boldly go where no man has gone before’ we who were kids in the fifties can reflect and boldly declare that Dan Dare has been there, done that! Robert and Maureen McQuillan highlight a doorstep challenge…
Something else we observed about that Anglican church recently visited (https://connectingwithyou.net/2016/04/25/reflections/) is a greeting in their website – ‘با سلام!’ Pronounced ‘Salam’ this is a warm ‘Hello’ welcome to Iranian Farsi-speaking visitors and enquirers.
Iran is the world’s fastest growing evangelical population… many Muslims are discovering Jesus, often as the white-robed stranger appearing supernaturally and working miracles. (See April’s Features – https://connectingwithyou.net/category/features/).
Good news indeed – but churches need to realise there is a vast mission field here on our own doorstep! (more…)
Ministry…some Christians foolishly think ‘That’s only the minister’ but 2 Corinthians 3:6 states we’re all ministers – competent servants!
It was great to catch up recently with dearest ‘old friends’ Hans and Ellie Rutgrink, who almost 40 years ago faithfully assisted us in planting/establishing a new church.
This was immediately after our Bible college days and we will never forget Hans’ joyous melodic phone call: ‘Hallooo, friends. We’re coming to join you…’
With their commitment, our church grew as we concentrated on teaching Bible truths, avoided time-demanding programs, and relied on the Spirit’s anointing to build the church by building people, Ephesians 4:11ff style. (more…)
Mike Shreve, evangelist, pastor and author, reminds believers of the reality of the church of Jesus Christ…
Firstly, Acts 2:47 explains, ‘The Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.’ So from the start, ‘the church’ was a work of God, not a work of man.
Actually the word ‘church’ is translated from the Greek word ecclesia (pronounced ek-klay-see’-ah) meaning ‘called out ones.’ So all who are in the church have been ‘called out of darkness into his marvelous light’ (1 Peter 2:9, emphasis mine). (more…)
